The Boy Scouts of America Honor Keystone Automotive's CEO
Keystone Automotive Industries CEO Richard Keister accepted the 2006 Automotive Distinguished Good Scout Award from the San Gabriel Valley Council, Boy Scouts of America. A luncheon was held in honor of Keister Dec. 1 at the Sheraton Fairplex. The event raised funds to help reach youth in Pomona, CA.

“I’m truly honored to be recognized by such an amazing organization,” said Keister. “The Boy Scouts of America do a stellar job at developing a foundation of core values for young people to emulate and build upon. Keystone is proud to support such a worthy organization.”

The city of Pomona, headquarters for Keystone Automotive, has more than 50,000 boys between the ages of 6 and 16 who are eligible to take part in scouting; however, less than 1 percent are currently registered as Boy Scouts. Keister and other community leaders are working to increase participation in Pomona by emphasizing the numerous positive experiences and life lessons that the Boy Scouts of America offer, such as leadership training and value building.

JASPER Unveils ‘Authentic Custom Drivetrain’ Program
In addition to its current line of engines, JASPER Authentic Custom Drivetrains will specialize in remanufacturing engines that are currently no longer offered, or have been turned away in the past because they did not fit into a production remanufacturing system.

This division is located on the second-floor of the Jasper, Indiana, remanufacturing facility, and is separate from the company’s first-floor engine division operations.

The goal of JASPER Authentic Custom Drivetrains is to cater to a customer base that is doing restoration projects, and is looking for something extra when they get their engine remanufactured.

“If you look at the popularity of television shows that highlight vehicle restoration, there’s a huge market out there of people restoring the older model vehicle they have setting in their garage,” says Alex Ernst, JASPER Authentic Group Leader. “One type of client that would benefit from our division, for instance, is the individual restoring a ’69 Corvette that is wanting his or her serial numbers to match, and wants their engine to be hand-built by experienced professionals.”

“With JASPER Authentic Custom Drivetrains, we can spend extra time remanufacturing an engine,” Ernst added. “We can give the customer that hands-on, hand-built treatment that our targeted customer base is looking for.”

In addition, JASPER Authentic Custom Drivetrains will provide some extras for the enthusiast. “Customers can opt to have their engine dynamometer tested in addition to the live-run test we perform,” said Ernst. “And we are going to provide the customer with documentation of the remanufacturing process. With a login name and password, they will be able to go to our website and check the progress of their engine and even view the dynamometer report if they have selected that option. They can print the information and archive it for their own records or use it to authenticate their engine as they show their vehicle.”

At the present time, JASPER Authentic Custom Drivetrains is remanufacturing engines, with plans to add transmissions and differentials in the coming months.

Haldex Goes Green During Remanufacturing
Air brake and suspension control systems supplier Haldex says it will save over 3,900 tons in carbon dioxide emissions in 2006 through its remanufacturing process.

This decrease is the result of energy saved by remanufacturing components rather than manufacturing new components. By recycling metal castings, Haldex eliminates the need to create and machine new castings. Therefore, all emissions associated with this process are eliminated. Savings include energy used in production such as raw materials, electricity and transportation, the company explains.

Haldex operates a remanufacturing facility in Marion, North Carolina. In the facility, the majority of raw materials required for production come from cores.

According to Mark Owen, product manager of the Remanufactured Product Division, “When it comes to heavy-duty truck components many major internal parts are salvageable, while items such as gaskets, o-rings and seals are replaced 100 percent. The components are cleaned, checked, gauged and then replaced, or machined as necessary to insure original product life.” In addition to salvaging internal components, Haldex recycles all cardboard, paper, pallets, water and oils from the cleaning process.

Parts not reusable, such as gaskets and rubber products, are eliminated during the cleaning process and discarded. Other non-reusable items worn beyond use or damaged beyond repair, such as iron and aluminum castings, are recycled for new production.

“Many truck components can be remanufactured,” said Owen. “But some components are better suited for remanufacturing than others. High metal content of a component is obviously a key since it represents an area of significant energy/material cost savings.”

Sonny Simerly - A Well Deserved Award
by Roslyn Bain, Rand Premium Electronics
As we slid in beside Sonny Simerly at church, we whispered – “So, how did Friday night go?” We knew Sonny had been invited to speak to the Chief Officer Graduates of the Coast Guard in Southern Florida. “Great,” was Sonny’s reply.

Knowing Sonny, we decided to push for more details. After some prodding, we discovered that Sonny had received a five minute standing ovation from not only every Chief Officer of the Coast Guard present, but from everyone in attendance! “I was quite embarrassed,” Sonny said.

The story gets better – Sonny was then bestowed a great honor by being made an Honorary Chief Officer of the Coast Guard! This certainly speaks volumes of the man so many of us have had the privilege of getting to know, seek his advice or work with, in our industry over many years.

Both Pete and I were thrilled and proud that such a great honor was bestowed on Sonny, which obviously, was so very deserving. In my enthusiasm, I said to Sonny, write out the details, as I believe your many friends in our industry would appreciate learning of your award. Sonny, in his typical humble manner, replied “This won’t happen.” He was right – it did not happen!

Unfortunately, because neither Pete nor I come from a military background, we may not have a total appreciation of the enormity of Sonny’s award, and I may not even have the correct “term” for his award (thanks, Sonny!). However, even as ignorant as we are of such protocol and terminology, when the Coast Guard elects to make an Army Colonel an Honorary Chief Officer of the Coast Guard, there has to be the highest respect for the person, his character, integrity, leadership and role model.

Simply put, we wanted to share Sonny’s award with all his friends and colleagues in our industry (even if we are going against Sonny’s wishes!).

Congratulations, Sonny!
