AGM Batteries: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

Absorbed Glass Matt batteries are here to stay and they may look like most other batteries, but that’s where the similarities end. How they are charged, tested and applied differs greatly from traditional maintenance free batteries. The discussion will be around what AGM batteries are, the advantages of the technology, the disadvantages of the technology, and the discussion to have with your customers to avoid misapplication of the batteries.


About Bob Jeffries- A 35 plus year veteran of the Heavy Duty Transportation Industry, Bob started his career by attending Diesel college and working as a Technician for Fleets in the Northeast Ohio area. He then turned his hands on experience into a job working in Technical Service for the Leece Neville Company, eventually becoming the High Output Product Manager. In 1998 Bob joined Delco Remy, a BorgWarner Company, and in his present position he serves as the Manager of Fleet Services, focusing on training Technicians, Vehicle Specifications and Warranty reduction for major Fleets in the United States.


As an active member of the S.1 Electrical Study Group of the American Trucking Association Technology and Maintenance Council, Bob was awarded the Silver Spark Plug Award in 2014, the TMC’s highest honor for his contributions to the advancements in vehicle maintenance.
